Finally a text on nutrition for dental hygienists.
I just got my copy and I am reading through it. The chapters on caries and periodontal disease are very current. I will be able to add these not only to my CE courses but to my research studies in oral biology. Thank you for this timely textbook.

The Development, Nutrition, and Management of the Young Calf
Published in Hardcover by Iowa State University Press (May, 1998)
Authors: Carl L. Davis and James K. Drackley
Average review score:

A Book Like No Other!
I must say that The Development, Nutrition and Management of the Young Calf is one of the best books I have ever bought. I am Dairy Science major at the University of Vermont and have always been dissapointed when trying to find factual books that pertain to the Dairy Industry. It is even harder to find books that are specific to an area like neonatal calves. Dr. Davis and Dr. Drackley have done a tremendous job detailing specific information about raising dairy calves. The authors do an excellent job describing the anatomy of the digestive system of the calf, describing energy requirements and metabolism of nutrients. Of course like any good calf book should do they talk about the importance of colostrum and saniatry housing. The book is referenced throughout, giving the reader the oppurtunity to do further more in depth reading at another time. I described this book as having the meat of multiple research papers, but as enjoyable to read as Hoard's Dairyman magazine. This book is so detailed and easy to read that a semester long college course could be esily developed from it. A Must read if your in the Dairy business!

Devil's Deception (Avon Romance)

Great Story
I really enjoyed this story of Christopher "Kit" Ryan & Lexa Howard.
Yes, there are many misunderstandings!
And yes they are both stubborn.
But it's still a great story.
I couldn't put it down. I wanted to know why
Kit(aka the pirate Dandy)wanted to destroy a shipping company and
what really happened with his mom.
Don't let this story slip through your fingers. Get it!
There is also a sequel to this book called DEVIL'S MOON.
Enjoy

The Diamond Approach: An Introduction to the Teachings of A.H. Almaas
Published in Paperback by Shambhala Publications (August, 1999)
Authors: John Davis and A. H. Almaas
Average review score:

Burning hard like a gemlike stone.
I arrived at the teachings of A. H. Almaas through Ken Wilber's books. "The universal message of the Diamond Approach," Almaas explains, is that "when we learn how to invite our true nature to reveal itself, it will guide us toward realizing our spiritual ground and, at the same time, actualize our potential in all walks of life." John Davis, one of Almaas's first students (p. xi), now teaches "Ali's" Diamond Approach to human potential here in Boulder, a practice that integrates the ancient spiritual wisdom of Gurdjieff, Sufism, Vajrayana and Zen Buddhism with modern psychological theory (p. 10). "The aim of the Diamond Approach," he writes, "is to live fully and deeply" (p. 3), and like a diamond, the practice is "durable, valuable, precious " (p. 17). In a way that is easy to understand, Davis surveys the main concepts and methods of the Diamond Approach, including teachings on inquiry, the soul, space, essence, self-realization, and pure Being. The practice itself, however, is more challenging. Writers including Wilber, Jack Kornfield, and Tony Schwartz have all recognized the value in the Diamond Approach, and in his book, Davis provides his readers with an introduction to Almaas's Diamond teachings that, well, glitters.

Dictation : New Methods, New Possibilities
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (February, 1989)
Authors: Paul Davis and Mario Rinvolucri
Average review score:

An Excellent ESL Tool!
I teach a intermediate/advanced reading and writing class in an adult English as a Second Language program in Arlington, Virginia, and this book is by far my favorite resource. My students are always asking for dictations, and this book provides stimulating twists on the standard dictation. Each activity is rated as to the difficulty and adaptability level, and most activities are adaptable to different levels. The book provides activities for groups and pair work, which is so important in the adult ESL classroom. The activities really get the students excited, and many get them up and moving around. A favorite is an activity called "Messenger and Scribe" in which one student reads from a prepared text taped to the wall in the hallway, remembers what he or she has read, and returns to the classroom to dictate to the "Scribe" in the pair what the text says. This provides excellent opportunities for self-correction, and different prepared texts can be used for different level students in a multi-level classroom. I highly recommend this book to any teacher who is looking for a new way to present an old favorite. If reading and writing is even a small part of the class that you teach, this book should be on your shelf.

Die Feldmaus Und Die Stadtmaus
Published in Paperback by European Language Institute, ELI (January, 1999)
Author: Jim Davis
Average review score:

excellent beginner book for young students
This is a wonderful book for elementary school aged kids who are learning German. I homeschool kids in the language (I speak it well myself), and this book offers a well-known story presented in simple sentences and straight-forward vocabulary. There is no English translation in the book, so the teacher needs to speak German him/herself. Used in conjunction with a kids' German grammar workbook (I use McGraw Hill's), Die Feldmaus und die Stadtmaus gives kids an opportunity to apply their budding knowledge of German and feel the accomplishment of reading a "real book."

Differential and Integral Calculus
Published in Hardcover by Chelsea Pub Co (June, 2001)
Authors: Edmund Landau, Melvin Hausner, and Martin Davis
Average review score:

The meaning of analysis
This book would more correctly be described as a book on analysis, because of the completeness of its proofs. It assumes you know just arithmetic of natural numbers, integers, rational, real and complex numbers-that is to say, just how to sum, multiply, subtract and divide. Edmund Landau wrote a masterpiece, because nothing is left without proof. You will not find a single step missing. From arithmetic to all the concepts of calculus, like differentiation, integration, infinite series and sequences, this book contains the mathematics that most mathematicians should know presented in a perfect way. It is not easy reading, though. Landau strives to reach the perfect axiomatic presentation, so like Euclid's "Elements" the book is the clear and beautiful presentation of a doctrine. I dare say that no book in analysis approaches Euclid's ideal of presentation better than Landau's, never in the past and never in the future. What you will find in this book is, in its best appearance, truth, that will not change even in a thousand years.
